Obituary

Thomas M. Derby, 67, of Springfield, MA, passed away unexpectedly on February 5, 2024. Born on November 5, 1956 in Burlington, VT, Thomas, who went by Tom, was devoted to his family and friends, and pursued many interests with enthusiasm and connoisseurship. He maintained a deep bond with his relatively small local family. Life in a supported community offered Tom many additional opportunities for relationship. He took his time before connecting with new people, but when he did, it was for keeps.

Tom is survived by his devoted mother, Rosalie Derby, of West Springfield, MA his sister, Carol Derby of Brooklyn, NY, his niece, Ariana Govan, of Los Angeles, CA, his cousin Jeffrey Platenik, of Springfield, MA, and his aunt Emily Tierney, of Annapolis, MD. Tom also leaves behind his five Tierney cousins, extended family, and the dedicated staff he came to love and trust in the 20 years he lived in his group home in Springfield. Tom was preceded in death by his father, Frank A. Derby.

At a very early age, Tom took up a love of cars, especially Fords, that never waned. He and his father constructed model cars at the kitchen table. Tom would bicycle miles to his favorite car dealerships to check what was on the lot, and talk shop with the sales people. He looked forward to the annual International Auto Show at the Javits Center in New York City, and made the trip faithfully with family and later staff from his house, coming home with his coveted brochures, and news of the latest changes to tail lights, fenders, paint colors and more on his favorite models. His own model car collection was impressive and catalogued in his memory.

His taste in music ran from classic country western to 60’s R&B. He was an avid concert goer, traveling to see Tom Jones several times in his lifetime. Like his model car collection, he knew every album he owned by every artist, the lyrics to hundreds of songs, and could name a song and its artist by ear.

Tom will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his loving family, friends, and the caring staff from his residence. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, February 11, 2024, from 3 - 4 pm at Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home, 985 Main Street, Agawam, MA.
