1924 - 2019


Elizabeth “Betty” Slate passed away on August 16, 2019 at the age of 95 at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center in Pomona California due to complications of a stroke. Born in Bradford Pennsylvania in 1924 to the late George M. and Agnes (Clark) Weeter, she moved to Springfield Massachusetts after high school and lived with her aunt, and began working at Westinghouse Electric Corporation for 10 years.  There is where she met Harold Slate whom she later married in 1944, and remained happily married until his passing in 2002.  She additionally worked part time at Hamden Glass & Paint and Grimaldi Oil during various years.  In June 2019, she moved to Duarte California to live with her son Gary and his husband Danny. She was an avid baker, and never a day went by when there wasn't some type of cookie, cake or pie in the house to delight in.  She loved sharing her baking with all her neighbors and friends, knowing all their favorites. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church and was a former member of the Holy Cross Women’s Club. She was a kind and loving person, not to just family and friends, but to anyone she would come in contact with. She will be missed by her son Gary Slate and his husband Danny Tsao, her daughter Laurie Slate, her grandson Justin Andrukonis, her granddaughter Jade Savela and husband Cameron Savela, her great grandson August Savela, and all her family and friends whom she had loved and cherished throughout her life. Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, August 26, 2019 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 beginning at 8:45AM at the funeral home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00AM at Holy Cross Church, 221 Plumtree Road, Springfield. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Tinkham Road, Springfield. In lieu of flowers, Betty requests that contributions be made to: Holy Cross Church.
