Springfield – Ida May Spada, 86, of Springfield, passed away peacefully Friday December 1st, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center with her family beside her. Born in Springfield to the late Joseph and Antoinetta (Lio) Mazzei, she was a graduate of Commerce High School. In earlier years, Ida worked with her father at Mazzei’s Market on Walnut St., 6-corners in Springfield and was a dedicated communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. She then married her loving husband, Joseph Spada and spent many years as a devoted housewife until his passing fourteen years ago. Ida volunteered for many years at a nursing home in Winsted, CT. She loved the beach, pizza, Italian music, dancing the Polka, playing bingo and was an avid New York Yankees fan, especially her favorite, Derek Jeter. Ida also enjoyed the gatherings at the Polish Club and the NCO Club at Westover AFB in her earlier years. She loved cooking with her family and sharing old family recipes especially our pignolata at Christmas time. She leaves her devoted nieces and nephews, Ronald Pettirossi (Carol) of Florida, Robert Pettirossi (Nancy) of New Hampshire, Linda Lipton (Mark) of New York, Katherine Niver (James) of Somers, CT, John E. Johnson III (Barbara) of Arizona and Theresa Morello (Joseph) of Somers, CT; many grand and great – grand nieces and nephews as well as her godchild Ellie Therrien, loving friends and family in Winsted, CT especially John and Anne Iacino, Cathy, Lori, Michelle and BettyAnn and many dear, lifelong friends, including Fran Allard, Maryann Haraty, Doris Krynicki and Alma Harvey. Besides her husband, Joseph, she was predeceased by her two sisters and their husbands, Angelina and Mauro Pettirossi and Theresa and John Johnson. Her upbeat personality in spite of numerous physical ailments and her handling of life's adversities was an inspiration to those who knew her. The family would like to thank the caring staff at East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing facility for the time Ida spent there as a resident. A Memorial service will be announced for Ida at a later date.
